Charcoal Steak House

Steak, BBQ.....
You may sometimes feel like to eat meat.
Then, visit Stake House.

It moved from Gulshan 2 to Gulshan 1.
From Gulshan 1 circle, walk to south(to Niketon) and turn left at the second street.
Fancy interior.
Bread is served complementary at first.
Main menu is steak, of course.
Decide fish/meat, and choose 2 side dishes from following choices.

- Fried rice
- Vegetable
- Mashed Potato
- Fried potato- Jacket Potato (baked potato with sour cream)
- Lyonnais Potato (baked potato with fried onion)

Potato and potato and potato!!

This is Teriyaki Chicken(1310tk+Service Charge 10%+VAT15%).
Sirloin Steak(1500tk+Tax).

Meat was so soft that I even didn't have to cut by knife.

We also ordered appetizer.
Tomato and mozzarella cheese salad(480tk+Tax).
It was also good though I wanted more amount!
There is some more space for cheese and tomato on the dish.....isn't it?

Service wasn't the best as a restaurant which charges service charge, but food and atmosphere was nice.
If your mood is steak and potato, let's try.

Caspian

Iranian restaurant in Bangladesh....
I wanted to visit the restaurant for a long time (and didn't get chance) since my friend recommended.

The restaurant's name is 'Caspian'.
It is located between Gulshan 1 and Gulshan 2, 4th floor of the building whose first floor has Agora(supermarket).

Entrance.
Inside.
There was no one when we entered.
I said...
"No one??"
Staff said
"It is still 6pm, people will come after 8pm".
But we only found one couple by 9pm.
Good for us, but can they run......????

Anyway.
The main dish in this restaurant is Kabab.
There are many kinds of kabab......but we weren't sure what was what.

So, we opened the page of "Caspian special", and ordered "Caspian kabab for 2 people".
You can choose 3 items from chicken, mutton, beef and fish.
Our choice was chicken, beef and fish.
(Most of Japanese don't choose mutton.....including us)
3 types of rice and 2 types of sauce were served together.
Saffron rice, butter rice, and....butter rice with raisins and nut.
Rice was Basmati rice which is quite different from Bangladeshi rice.
Basmati comes from the word in Sanskrit which means "fragrant".

One sauce is tomato based, and another is yogurt based.
Beef with tomato and fish with yogurt sauce was good!
I liked fish the most, but chicken was incredibly soft!
I also liked baked tomato put besides meat.
1,800tk+VAT(5%)+Service Charge for 2 people.

It was actually too much amount for 2 girls, so if you don't eat much, it may be better to order kabab for 1 person and some side dishes.
I found hummus in menu, so would like to try it next....(I love hummus!!)

If your mood is not curry, Chinese, or Korean....why don't you try Iranian?

Poplar

Weekend.......
I was spending lazy day......then, came up with going to cafe with my laptop.
Let's do some work with a piece of cake & a cup of coffee.

Poplar is in Gulshan 2, opposite of Westin hotel.
Entrance.
At first, it seemed like bakery.
There were many kinds of bread. Quite similar with Japanese bakery.
One piece is around 100tk.

Lovely cakes!

I haven't seen these kinds of cakes for a while. (I used to in Japan!)
Then, inside is cafe.
I ordered baked cheese cake and coffee.
It wasn't too sweet and tart was crispy.
Coffee is ok.......but I was impressed they served hot milk with coffee.

Each of cake & coffee was 200tk(+VAT15%+Service Charge2%).

Wifi is available.
You can have relax time or work with your PC.
(I didn't work much as a result, but at least finished this blog!)

Cox's Bazar -Others-

Even though I have lived in Bangladesh for 1.5 years, I still find something new especially when I go out from Dhaka.
What did I find this time in Cox's Bazar??

1. Seafood fry
City with ocean!
From evening, stall keepers start frying sea food.....like crab, fish e.t.c.
I so wanted to try......but unfortunately, I didn't have space for fried stuff at that time.
Ummmm...next time.

2. Snack stall for breakfast
I have passed there.....around 9am, I think.
However, snacks weren't ready.......(I expected something inside the pot, but nothing)

What is impressive about this stall?
He (will) have pasteries, boiled eggs, and tea.....so your breakfast will be completed!
In Bangladesh, people often sell only one item....but here everything at a stall.
Very reasonable, isn't it?

3. Parata stand
He is preparing Parata......and when it's done, hangs it.
In Dhaka, I see  people throwing fried parata on big plate and make a pile.
In this way, parata must stay better!

3.

By accident, I found something was fried.
In 2 kinds of shapes and sizes.
Fried bread with simple sweet taste.
Especially when it has just fried and you have it, it will melt in your mouth.
Only 5tk for a small piece!
I hope I found it in Dhaka.....!

It is always very exciting to find something new on the way of my trip :)
Thank you for reading Chittagong & Cox's Bazar trip!

Cox's Bazar(3) -Poushee-

There is a restaurant a volunteer who lives in Cox's bazar regularly goes.
It is like his dining and was mine too while my stay in Cox's bazar.

It is a Bengal food restaurant.
Go through curtain, quite a big space there.
Wash your hands, and take a seat.
Staff will bring plate, hot water, and lemon.
He will pour hot water to plate, then you wash it with lemon.
Feeling clean?
Bhorta (mashed vegetables/fish with spices) is famous in this restaurant.
"assorted" Bhorta.
There were tomato, okra, dried fish, potato, bitter gourd, eggplant, beans, e.t.c....
I have never seen this much of kinds.

Then, Rupchanda fry again.
(somehow cut into 3 pieces....)
What's special in Poushee is complementary dishes.
We only ordered Bhorta plate, Rupchanda fry, and beef curry.
Then, got this much.
Salad, pickle, daar, something with tomato and onion.
These could make me full!!
All these dishes cost 750tk for 2 people.
I tried my best, but I was still too far to finish all the dishes.

And.......later fried potato came.

For some reason, with beef curry.
But the potato was good.
Another day.
I went to Poushee for breakfast because I heard chicken soup in the morning was very good.

So, this is the chicken soup and parata!
Huge parata....

The soup is a bit like green curry in Thailand.
Maybe coconut makes me feel so.

I ate about 60% of parata and almost finished soup.
I thought I would leave parata because the oil could make me feel sick later.
When I was about to finish, a staff quickly took away the dish, filled soup again.

So....
Of course, I finished the soup and parata.
I liked the soup very much.
Soup was 70tk, and parata was 10tk.....as I remember.

One another day.
I heard their Biriyani was also really good and the volunteer's friend praised it to the skies!
So, I went to Poushee again before my flight.
(My flight was 2pm. Lunch menu starts from 12pm....I went there at 11:45am, but they served soon)

I straightly went to a table without washing hands because I had heard hot water to wash hands would be given when you ordered Biriyani.
But why only when Biriyani??
This is chicken Biriyani.
Served with sauce, pickle, and again something with onion and tomato.
Yes, it was veeeery good.
You can smell the scent....and rice tasted good with nuts and fried onions.
150tk for a plate. (Unfortunately, they don't have half-size)

How about dessert??
I like Bangladeshi pudding.
Unlike other Bangladeshi sweet, pudding isn't usually so sweet.
Very smooth texture with simple taste of eggs, milk and sugar.
It doesn't look so big, but it was.
40tk per piece.

The volunteer said he would not be bored even though he ate here 3 days in a row.
I understand.

Cox's Bazar(1) -Burmise Market-

Leaving Chittagong and going through bad condition road for 5 hours....finally came to Cox's Bazar where people say one of the best resorts in Bangladesh.
A JICA volunteer who lives in Cox's Bazar showed me around and took care of me well during my stay.
Every time someone comes, he shows them around Cox's bazar and takes restaurant...e.t.c.....so he is kind of professional.

Let's start with Burmise market.
Many products from Myanmar are available in Cox's Bazar, especially at Burmise market.
There are products of hill area tribes too.
The market is quite different from Bangladshi markets.
Very unique.
Design and taste are different.

It looks nice....but people may stare at me if I wear it in Dhaka.

This is a shop which sells snacks from Myanmar.
You will find many interesting things.

Guess what it is?

Pickles of "tree".
Tree?
Yes, tree.......tree, which is plant.
It was...........sour.

I bought small packages of nuts for souvenir.
It is very hard but tasty.
Why don't you get some for souvenir or for your jaw exercise?

One more thing you have to try in Cox's Bazar is Burmise noodle.
However, it is available at specific places where you won't find by yourself.
A bit difficult to explain direction, but try to give direction here.....

At first, go to Burmise market by main road.
If you come from main city, you will find a path before bus station on your left side.
(the beginning of Burmise market)

Right side is as below picture shows.

Turn left, go straight.
There is a gate at the end of the road.
Then, go through the gate.....you will find Burmise noodle place at the corner of garden.
There are 2 kinds of noodles.
One with soup and one without soup.
I and the volunteer ordered different kinds.
This is soup.
Broth is made from fish....
 This is one with soup.(20tk)
It doesn't taste "Bangladesh".
Not spicy, but very mild taste with tasty fish soup.

Another is without soup(25tk).
Noodle is mixed with sauce, served with the soup.
I liked the one without soup more.
Noodle with sauce was good, and I liked texture too.
I wish it was available in Dhaka......then I would have eaten everyday.(till I am bored, maybe)

Most of Japanese love this noodle, but him.
However every time someone comes to Cox's Bazar, he takes them to this place and eats noodle together.
So he has it quite often.
Thank you for accompanying me!

Burmise market where you can find different taste of Bangladesh...let's enjoy unique atmosphere.

Chittagong(2) -Zaman Hotel-

Chittagong is the seaside city.
What to eat? - Of course seafood.
I went to Zaman Hotel to eat Lobster!

There are some branches, but the one I went is in 2nd floor of building near GEC circle.
At first, fried Rupchanda(butterfish).

It is so crispy that you can eat whole part.
Then, lobster!

There are 3 lobsters.(I didn't eat 3 though)
Half is 250tk, full is 500tk.
However, they only had 300tk lobster when I went there.

See how big it is?

Staff cut your lobster with scissors.
(but somehow he came to cut after sometime we started eating...)
Sauce was also very tasty.
I thought I could eat one plate of rice with only the sauce.

You can not leave Chittagong without having seafood!

Nehari & Labbra

Almost 1.5 years have passed since I came to Bangladesh.
(Scary to know how fast time passes!)
However, there are still so many things I don't know and have never tried.

I introduce the new dishes I had recently.
One is "Nehari".
This is stew with slow cooked beef or goat, usually served with bone marrow/brain.
The one I had was curry taste, but there is mild taste soup without spices as I heard.
It is full of collagen.
(I thought I don't like collagen types of stuff, but it was good. I liked it.)

Nehari is usually for breakfast and served with naan/parata.
I had it as breakfast(but somehow it was almost noon) at a typical Bengali restaurant along Bishwa road.
Nehari is not available for every store, but they had it.
It is more popular in Old Dhaka.
Umm.....many many kinds of food come from Old Dhaka!

One more thing I had these days is "labbra".
This is one kind of curry using vegetables which is not ripen.
There is no rule which vegetable has to be used...e.t.c.
You will not find Labbra at restaurant because it is cooked at home.
I think people use vegetables whatever they have.
Then cut everything, mix, fry, and make curry.

Meat and fish are considered as rich food in Bangladesh though I like vegetables.
When Bangladeshi people invite me, they often prepare meat and meat....or fish.
I don't usually get chance to have much vegetables at Bangladeshi's house.
However I had Labbra at kitchen of Hotel Abakash(Parjatan restaurant) when a chef invited me for lunch.
Curry was oily as usual, but many kinds of vegetables tasted very good.
(When it is fried, heads of Hilsa fish were cooked together to give scent)
For the chef, this Labbra didn't seem rich dish, but I liked it very much.

It seems still long way to explore Bangladesh.
I will write if I find anything new again.
